Steph’s Stories – Digital: what I hope to achieve in 2017

Greetings, budding marketeers! I’ve taken down my Christmas tree and there’s but a few crumbs left of mince pie; it’s time to look forward.

2016 was a baptism of fire for me in terms of digital marketing training; starting a new job in a new place meant that the year was all about being exposed to lots of pieces of software and acclimating to the destination tourism industry (a new venture for me).

This year, I’m determined to master some aspects of digital with which I have some familiarity, and get to grips with others that will make my life and everyone else’s a lot easier.

We’re lucky in our industry; things change all the time and so we’re compelled to keep current and creative. I’ve decided to group my goals together in this blog post and share them with you!

1. Learn basic HTML

My life would be SO much easier if I get to grips with even basic HTML writing. Short for HyperText Markup Language, HTML is the language used to create documents on the World Wide Web. Knowing how to write HTML code can afford me the ability to build my own website.

Perhaps more importantly (as I have no interest in writing a website from scratch whatsoever), websites like WordPress accept properly formed HTML formatting. Inserting your own code provides so many customisable opportunities! Why settle for a website that barely serves its purpose?

For my personal blog, it would take a single line of HTML code to insert a plethora of media to my posts. Furthermore, I could then think about tackling custom layouts, animated elements, and more.

2. Teach myself more advanced Photoshop skills

At present, I only really need to use Photoshop to create edit photographs for the websites and social media I maintain and for building marketing e-mails.

I would love to be able to execute a multitude of creative designs that require photo composition or manipulation from several existing photos to create even better images, and it’ll take some homework with ol’ Adobe to do that

Imagine being able to restore a fantastic photograph of the area I promote to a brilliant standard for our followers to enjoy? Wow!

3. Become a PPC wizard

Paid advertising is a must if you want your website to receive high visibility on Google, or your social media ads to appear in the News Feed of your target audience. PPC stands for pay-per-click, a model of internet marketing in which advertisers pay a fee each time one of their ads is clicked.

PPC is an incredibly valuable skill for me to learn. Being able to carry out this task in-house will save my company lots of money. In terms of my career progression, any job at a higher level than where I’m at now will expect it, so it’s a worthwhile investment personally, too!

I’m going on a PPC course at the end of February; I promise to feed back my thoughts!

4. Dedicate more time to my personal blog

I started my new blog in October, and I’ve really enjoyed building the website and developing a corner of the internet to talk about the things that interest me. I’ve found myself making friends and gifting myself some introspection; it’s very cathartic! I want to try and post at least one blog post a week in 2017 – fingers crossed!
