Thinking back to my time as a teacher the word ‘analyse’ was one of those mysterious terms used liberally in A Level history teaching.
It was bandied about with other equally abstract terms like ‘interpret’ and ‘evaluate’. Everyone knew they should be doing it but no one actually knew how.
As a teacher I was often asked by my students to explain the term and it was a moment I dreaded!
Not because I didn’t know what it was. Not because I couldn’t do it. It’s just one of those things that’s tricky to explain in simple terms.
